This post is written with i4design clients in mind, but it may prove useful for anyone who receives ManageWP Care Reports from their website administrator.
An Overview of WordPress and the Care Report
All these elements that make up your site need to be kept up-to-date so as to include new functionalities as developers add them and, more importantly, to keep your site running well and safe from spammers and hackers.
WordPress and its plugins and themes are like any other software installed on your computer, or like any other application on your devices. Periodically developers release updates which provide new features or fix known bugs. Regardless of their level of severity, software bugs must be fixed.
Part of my job as your website administrator is to check your website every day and, when a software update is released that fixes a bug, update it as soon as possible so that you’re running the most secure and stable versions of the product. The Care Report is a summary of this work.
The report is split into several sections including update information and performance results. In some cases, sections that are not necessary are excluded in a client’s report – for example, WooCommerce info is only supplied to owners of websites that are used to sell products or services online.
ManageWP is a comprehensive solution for managing WordPress sites, and it’s what your Care Reports are automatically compiled by. The report doesn’t provide you with a list of all the work I do in the background, but does list everything that was done through the ManageWP app.
Updates apply to all Core WordPress, Theme and Plugin files.
Developers work hard on WordPress to provide us with a reliable platform and we can say the same for many of the plugins and themes. However, there can be problems with any software. To use newly developed features or to prevent potential bugs or remove existing ones, things must be kept up-to-date.
It’s also very important to keep your website running as well as possible. Speed matters. When you edit a post or page on your website, WordPress automatically saves the new revision to the database. If you edit things a few times (and particularly if the post is long), your database soon gets clogged up with old revisions that just sit there, taking up valuable space. Removing these unnecessary post revisions increases your website’s speed and efficiency.
Backing up your website regularly is vital. Every experienced website owner knows this. If something with your website goes wrong, unless you can restore from backup, you could lose everything.
The summary in your Care Report is obtained from your website’s Google Analytics account. Google Analytics is a free web analytics service offered by Google that tracks and reports website traffic.
You may not think your site has anything worth being hacked for, but websites are compromised all the time. The majority of website security breaches are not to steal your data or deface your website, but instead are attempts to use your server as an email relay for spam, or to serve files of an illegal nature. Malware injection attacks can ruin your website performance and ranking in a number of ways.
The ManageWP security check makes sure that I know your website is clean, and if any files become infected I’ll be notified and will take immediate action.
The scans include Google’s Safe Browsing technology, which examines billions of URLs per day looking for unsafe websites. Every day, they discover thousands of new unsafe sites, many of which are legitimate websites that have been compromised.
Norton Safe Web is a service developed by Symantec Corporation designed to help users identify malicious websites.
PhishTank is an anti-phishing site.
As you can see, many other technologies are used to make sure that your website is clean.
By analysing the keywords used on your website, the SEO report tells you who your competitors are and how you and they are performing in search results.
Keywords must be entered for anything to be analysed and reported on this page. I’ve entered a few obvious keywords for your website so that you can see how they’re performing. If you’d like to see the results for any other specific keywords, please let me know and I’ll add them to the list.
This makes it easy for you to compare keywords with one another and figure out which ones you should be focusing on or adding to your page content.
The care report pulls information from the WooCommerce plugin directly and reorganises it to fit the format of the report. It provides a handy overview of all your sales so that you can see at a glance how many new customers have signed up, what products have sold recently, and which are performing well.
