When to redesign or rebuild your website
If your website is more than three years old, chances are it’s out of date and sending the wrong message to your customers and search engines.
We tend to think websites are like buildings – physical things that are built only once. That’s an incorrect way to think about them. Your website is more like the kitchen within your house. It needs a re-design every few years to keep it looking up to date and functioning properly, or at least incremental changes to keep it on trend, to hold it’s value, and to stop you cringing with embarrassment when you have friends around for dinner.
If any of these statements below apply to your website, it’s time to consider a redesign. If you look at your current website and don’t feel proud of it, then a change is definitely needed.
The website displays yesterday’s outdated design trends
Like fashion, design trends change quickly. If the age of your website is obvious by its appearance, and visitors are mistaking it for a retro design exhibit, it’s time to dust off the cobwebs and make it look new and interesting again. There is nothing that will make a user click on the back button quicker than a visually unappealing website.
A hectic and crowded website could cause visitors to leave the page and revert to another website that boasts a simpler design and smoother experience. Unfortunately, an outdated website leads to an extremely poor first impression as visitors automatically assume that your company is either unprofessional or even obsolete.
It no longer reflects your brand and marketing
When you look at your website, do you see a genuine representation of your company? Most businesses evolve over time. If and when that happens, it’s important to update your website so that it accurately reflects your present day mission, products and services.
If your logo and other branding elements have changed since the site was built and have not been updated, then your website is no longer in line with your business. A redesign of your site will help you to create the best first impression possible, ensuring that your website is aligned with the quality of service that your business provides.
Sections of content are not up-to-date, relevant or accurate
The style and wording used on your website may no longer align with your current business message. Even if you’re someone who remembers to add fresh content regularly, there will be old information on your website, including staff details, obsolete products or service packages, or photos that are dated and no longer represent the subject accurately.
New customers can’t find you because your SEO is out of date
No matter how pretty your website looks, it is a waste of space if it is failing to attract visitors. One of the key functions of your website is to bring you new customers by generating good rankings with the search engines when they look for your services or products online. What was ranking highly for average monthly searches last time you checked may no longer be the case, because how people search for what they want has evolved.
There have been a range of Google algorithm updates including Penguin, Panda and Hummingbird. The search engine giant is committed to improving user experience (UX) so the days of keyword stuffing and other tired SEO practices are long gone.
Your site is slow and not mobile friendly
Your website needs to be mobile friendly in order to succeed online today. If your website is slow to load or requires scrolling and zooming to view the content on a smart phone then visitors will get fed up and try another website. Since 2015, Google also started ranking mobile friendly sites more favourably, so your chances of placing well on the Search Engine Results Pages will be reduced.
The solution is to pay for a responsive website upgrade and start reaching out to mobile consumers before it’s too late.
You’re still using Flash
If your site is still in Flash, then it is incredibly outdated. iPhones and iPads do not support flash and search engines can’t read sites in Flash. This means your website is not being read by Google and won’t be appearing where it could be in the search engine results pages.
Your visitors have to install a plugin and make sure they have the latest version to view your website, which impacts the user experience in a negative way. Flash is difficult to use, difficult to create and difficult to maintain. It is also no longer needed to create animated, interactive features.
Advantages to getting your website updated with i4design
If you’re a reasonably new company, or began with a fairly small design budget, the website creation process was probably a stressful and even frustrating experience. Since it was your first attempt at creating a company site, the end result was likely less than stellar. And you’d prefer not to have to go through that again.
I also understand that, having spent money to set up your site in the first place, you may not want to have to fork out thousands again to start from scratch. That’s why I offer a re-design service that consists of a small upfront fee only. Then once your new website goes live you just pay for ongoing hosting and website care.
The Professional Re-Design Care Plan even includes an annual site refresh, meaning you’ll never have to get a new website built again.
